Wai'anapanapa State Park spans 120 acres and is home to several of Maui's most popular attractions. One of its most famous features is Pa'iloa, the black sand beach. This beach is made of ground lava, and near the edge of the water, the beach becomes hard lava. To the east side of the beach, visitors can find a cave that leads to the ocean.
The park also contains several historical sites, including ancient burial grounds, old cave shelters, and a pictograph. The Kihaapi'ilani Trail leads from this area back to Hana Town. If visitors want to take this trail to the historical sites, they should expect the walk to take at least two hours.
Wai'anapanapa State Park is one of the most popular campgrounds in Hawaii. Camp Maui-X, located within the park's boundaries, has camping gear rentals and designated areas for drive-up and tent camping. They also lead guided camping excursions for travelers.
