Oʻahu is not a cheap island, but its greatest treasures cost nothing. Every beach is public. The ocean is free, and so are the sunsets, the big waves, the turtles, most of the trails and some of the most moving historic sites in America. With a bus pass and a cooler, you could fill a week without buying a single ticket.
The best free things to do on Oʻahu
1. Swim and snorkel at any beach
Every beach in Hawaii is public by law. Try Waikīkī, Ala Moana Beach Park, Kailua, Waimānalo and, in summer, Shark's Cove and Waimea Bay.
2. Visit the USS Arizona Memorial
The memorial program and visitor centre at Pearl Harbor are free; book a timed ticket online ($1 fee) or try for walk-up tickets early.
3. Watch the North Shore waves
From November to February, watching the world's best surfers at Waimea Bay, Pipeline and Sunset Beach costs nothing.
4. See turtles at Laniākea
Green sea turtles often haul out on the sand; volunteers explain their behaviour.
5. The Kūhiō Beach Hula Show
A free evening hula show on the beach in Waikīkī, beginning as the torches are lit.
6. Friday fireworks in Waikīkī
Watch from the beach as fireworks light up the sky over the Hilton Hawaiian Village, usually around 7:45 pm.
7. Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail
A paved walk with sweeping views; whales in winter.
8. Kaʻena Point
A wild coastal walk to the island's western tip and a seabird sanctuary.
9. Chinatown and the Capitol District
Walk past ʻIolani Palace (grounds are free), the Kamehameha statue and the State Capitol, then browse Chinatown's lei stands and markets.
10. Kakaʻako street art
Dozens of giant murals painted during the annual POW! WOW! festival.
11. Kapiʻolani Park and the Waikīkī Shell
Picnic beneath banyan trees in Hawaii's oldest public park, at the foot of Diamond Head.
12. Sunset at Ala Moana Beach Park
Locals' favourite sunset spot, with calm water and the Waikīkī skyline.
13. Byodo-In Temple grounds
A small entry fee is charged, but the view of the temple from the memorial park drive is free.

A free day on Oʻahu
Start at dawn on the Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail, watching the sun rise over the windward islands. Spend the morning snorkeling at a calm beach, bring a picnic from the supermarket, and take the bus to the North Shore to watch surfers and turtles at Laniākea. Back in Waikīkī, catch the free hula show at Kūhiō Beach as the torches are lit, and on a Friday, stay for the fireworks over the water. The only costs: bus fares and a shave ice.
Tips for a cheap Oʻahu trip
- Stay in Waikīkī and skip the car; use TheBus.
- Eat plate lunches, poke and food trucks.
- Bring your own snorkel gear and a cooler.
- Plan free days around beaches, hikes and sunsets, and pick one or two paid highlights.
