Every Hawaiian island has a nickname, and the nicknames tell you a lot. Oʻahu is "the gathering place", Maui "the Valley Isle", Kauaʻi "the Garden Isle". Between them, they welcome most of Hawaii's visitors, and choosing between them is the most common question first-time travellers ask. Here is a clear, honest comparison of all three.
The short answer
Oʻahu for history, food, city life and value. Maui for beaches, resorts, Haleakalā and whales. Kauaʻi for cliffs, hiking and peace. If you can only choose one for a first trip, choose Oʻahu or Maui; save Kauaʻi for a trip when nature is the whole point, or once its parks have fully reopened after Hurricane Lowell.

Oʻahu: the gathering place
Oʻahu is Hawaii's heart: the seat of the old kingdom, the site of the attack on Pearl Harbor, and home to most of the state's people. It has the busiest beaches and the best restaurants, and also wild corners: the windward cliffs, the North Shore's surf and the remote tip at Kaʻena Point. It is the cheapest island and the easiest to visit without a car. Read our Oʻahu itinerary.
Maui: the Valley Isle
Maui is the island most people picture when they think of a Hawaii holiday: golden beaches, resorts, the sunrise over Haleakalā crater and the Road to Hāna. It has the best whale watching in Hawaii and some of the best snorkeling. It is also the most expensive, and still recovering from the 2023 Lahaina fire. Read our Maui itinerary.
Kauaʻi: the Garden Isle
Kauaʻi is the oldest and greenest of the three, with the Nā Pali cliffs, Hanalei Bay and Waimea Canyon, and no building taller than a palm tree. It is the best for hiking and the quietest. After Hurricane Lowell in September 2026, some of its most famous parks were closed in October 2026, so check before you go. Read our Kauaʻi itinerary.

Want an island not on this list? The Big Island offers volcanoes and manta rays: see Maui vs the Big Island and which island to visit.
When to go
Every island is warm all year, with daytime highs at the coast of about 80–88°F (27–31°C). The seasons change the ocean more than the weather: from November to March big swells pound north-facing shores and humpback whales arrive; from May to September north shores calm down and south shores get the surf. Prices peak over Christmas and New Year, spring break and midsummer. The best-value months are usually late April to early June and September to early November; hurricane season runs from June to November. See the best time to visit Hawaii.
Getting between them
There is no ferry between Oʻahu, Maui and Kauaʻi; you fly. Honolulu is the hub, with flights of about 35–40 minutes to Kahului (Maui) and Līhuʻe (Kauaʻi), and there are also direct Maui–Kauaʻi flights. Inter-island fares rose sharply in 2026, often to $150–300 one way, so price them before planning a three-island trip. See island hopping in Hawaii.
A day on each island
On Oʻahu, a day might hold Pearl Harbor at dawn, Chinatown at lunch and surfers on the North Shore at sunset. On Maui, it might begin above the clouds on Haleakalā and end with a humpback breaching off Wailea. On Kauaʻi, it might be a boat beneath the Nā Pali cliffs, dolphins at the bow, and an evening in Hanalei as the waterfalls catch the last light. Three islands, three rhythms; choose the one that sounds like your kind of day.
What about the other islands?
The Big Island is the fourth great choice: the only island with an active volcano, plus manta rays, Mauna Kea's stars and the best variety of landscapes. Lānaʻi is a small, quiet island with luxury resorts, reached by ferry from Maui. Molokaʻi is the most traditional and least developed of the inhabited islands, with very few visitor facilities; it suits travellers who want to experience rural Hawaii respectfully. Compare them in Maui vs the Big Island and our island guides to Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi.
