14 Best Things to Do on Oʻahu With Kids

Oʻahu may be the easiest place in Hawaii to travel with children. Flights are short, beaches with lifeguards are everywhere, and when the weather turns there is always a museum, an aquarium or a mall nearby. Most of all, there are moments children never forget: a turtle surfacing beside them, their first wave on a surfboard, the fire dancers at a luau. Here are the best family days out.

The best things to do with kids

1. Swim at Ko Olina

Four sheltered lagoons with soft sand, lifeguards and shade. Ideal for toddlers.

2. Kūhiō Beach

In the middle of Waikīkī, sea walls create calm, shallow pools; nearby, children can watch surfers and canoe rides.

3. The Waikīkī Aquarium

A small, excellent aquarium at the Diamond Head end of the beach, with monk seals, jellyfish and reef fish. Adult tickets cost about $12.

4. The Honolulu Zoo

Next to Kapiʻolani Park, a short walk from Waikīkī.

5. Hanauma Bay

The best place on Oʻahu for a first real snorkel. Children under 12 enter free; closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

6. A surf lesson in Waikīkī

For children from about five or six who can swim.

7. Turtles on the North Shore

Green sea turtles often rest on the sand at Laniākea. Stay behind the ropes and keep 10 feet away.

The perfect reward after a North Shore day.

9. Dole Plantation

10. The Polynesian Cultural Center

Canoe rides, games, villages from across Polynesia and a fire-knife show. Closed Sundays.

11. Bishop Museum and planetarium

Volcanoes you can make erupt, Hawaiian artefacts and star shows: perfect for a rainy day.

12. Pearl Harbor

The Battleship Missouri and Bowfin submarine are great for curious older children.

13. Tide pools at Makapuʻu or Kaʻena

At low tide on calm days, rock pools full of life. Stay away from the edge on big-wave days.

14. Kualoa Ranch

Older children love the movie-site tours and the jungle valley.

Tips for families

Our one-week family itinerary on Oʻahu puts these together day by day.

Where to stay with kids

Families usually choose between Waikīkī, where you can walk to the beach, aquarium and zoo without a car, and Ko Olina, where the calm lagoons and family resorts are on the doorstep and you need a car. Many families split the week between the two. On the North Shore, the Turtle Bay resort area is the main legal place for short stays. See where to stay on Oʻahu.

Rainy days

Oʻahu's showers are usually short, and it is almost always sunny somewhere: if it rains in Kailua, try Ko Olina. On a properly wet day, the Bishop Museum, its planetarium, the Waikīkī Aquarium and the Ala Moana Center are all good options. Sea Life Park on the south-east coast is another family favourite.

When to go with kids

Summer brings calm seas on the North Shore and long days; winter brings big waves to watch and whales offshore. Christmas, spring break and July are the busiest and most expensive. Late August and early June are good compromises for school-age families.

What it costs

Many of Oʻahu's best family days are free: beaches, tide pools, turtles, Pearl Harbor's USS Arizona Memorial and the Kūhiō Beach hula show. Paid highlights for a family of four add up: Hanauma Bay costs $25 per non-resident adult (children under 12 free), the Waikīkī Aquarium about $12 per adult, and a luau or the Polynesian Cultural Center can cost several hundred dollars for four. Surf lessons typically run around $100 per person. Pick two or three paid experiences and fill the rest with free ones; see a family budget.
