A family trip to Hawaii is one of the great childhood memories: a first green sea turtle, a first wave, a sunset with sand everywhere. It is also a big investment, because many costs double when you travel as four. The secret is that the largest savings come from a few smart choices, not from skipping the good things. Here is what a family of four really spends, and how to make it work.
The short answer
For two adults and two children flying from the US West Coast, a week in Hawaii costs about $6,000–7,000 on a budget, $10,000–11,000 for a comfortable mid-range trip, and $20,000 or more at a luxury resort. Without flights, plan on roughly $650 a day on a budget and $1,100 a day mid-range for the whole family.
| Family of 4, 7 nights | Budget | Mid-range | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flights (4 round trips) | $1,600 | $2,400 | $4,000 |
| Stay with tax | $2,500 | $4,400 | $9,000 |
| Car & gas | $600 | $900 | $1,200 |
| Food | $1,150 | $1,750 | $3,500 |
| Activities | $350 | $1,000 | $2,500 |
| Total | $6,200 | $10,450 | $20,200 |
Estimates from 2026 prices for two adults and two children. Budget and mid-range assume a condo or vacation rental with a kitchen; luxury assumes a resort room or suite.
Flights for four
Four plane tickets are the cost that hurts most. From the US West Coast, round-trip fares have run from about $350 in quiet winter weeks to $800–1,200 nonstop in summer, so the same trip can cost $1,400 or $4,800 in flights depending on the dates. Families tied to school holidays pay the highest prices; if you can travel in early June, late August or over a short autumn break, the savings are large.
Avoid adding an inter-island hop unless it really matters to you. In 2026 one family reported paying about $150 per person each way to fly from Honolulu to Hilo, or around $600 for four people, before luggage fees.
Where to stay: condo or hotel?
For families, a condo or vacation rental is usually better value than a hotel. In mid-2026 vacation rentals across Hawaii averaged around $500–530 per unit per night, but a typical unit sleeps four to six, has a kitchen and washing machine, and saves you from booking two hotel rooms. Big resort-area condo complexes on Maui's west and south shores, at Waikoloa on the Big Island and at Poʻipū on Kauaʻi are built for families.
Hotels make sense if you want kids' clubs, big pools and lagoons. Ko Olina on Oʻahu, Kāʻanapali on Maui and the Kohala Coast are classic family resort areas. Remember the extras: about 18.7% tax on every night, resort fees of $40–75, and parking. Ask whether children stay free and whether a rollaway or sofa bed is included.
Cars, food and activities
Car: you will want a car on every island except, perhaps, if you stay in Waikīkī. A midsize car or small SUV cost about $64–92 a day in spring 2026 before taxes and fees, depending on the island; a minivan costs more. Bring or rent car seats; rental companies charge for them per day.
Food: this is where families save the most. A grocery run for breakfasts, sandwiches and snacks, plus plate lunches at about $15–25 each and the occasional restaurant dinner, keeps food to around $160–250 a day for four. Eating every meal at a resort can easily cost $400–500 a day.
Activities: many of the things kids love most are free: calm, lifeguarded beaches, tide pools, turtle-spotting and short hikes. Paid highlights add up quickly for four. A luau costs roughly $140–230 per adult, with lower child prices; a snorkel cruise around $100–200 per adult. A sample family week
Here is a realistic mid-range week for a family of four on Oʻahu, one of the best islands for children:
- Flights: four round trips from the West Coast in a shoulder month, about $2,400.
- Stay: a two-bedroom condo for seven nights at around $530 a night plus tax, about $4,400.
- Car: a midsize SUV for the week with taxes, fees and gas, about $900.
- Food: breakfast at the condo, picnic lunches, plate lunches and a few dinners out, about $1,750.
- Activities: Hanauma Bay, Pearl Harbor (free), a luau, a snorkel boat and a surf lesson, about $1,000.
Total: about $10,450, or roughly $375 per person per day including flights. Swap Oʻahu for Maui and the same trip costs about $2,000–3,000 more, mainly because of accommodation.
How families save
- Travel outside peak holidays when you can. Early June and late August are cheaper than July, and early December is far cheaper than Christmas.
- Choose one island. One base with a kitchen beats two hotels and an extra four flights.
- Rent a car only when you need it on Oʻahu, and pick a place where you can walk to the beach.
- Fill the days with free things: beaches, tide pools, turtle-watching, sunset and stargazing.
- Book the big-ticket items early and choose one or two, rather than a paid activity every day.
Quick answers
How much is a Hawaii trip for a family of 4?
About $6,000–7,000 for a budget week, $10,000–11,000 mid-range and $20,000 or more in luxury, including flights from the US West Coast.
Is a condo or a hotel cheaper for a family in Hawaii?
Usually a condo. A vacation rental averaged about $500–530 a night in mid-2026 but sleeps four or more and has a kitchen, which saves a lot on meals and on a second hotel room.
What is the cheapest Hawaiian island for a family?
Oʻahu. It has the most affordable hotels and condos, many calm lifeguarded beaches, free and cheap activities, and the shortest flights from the mainland.
Do kids pay for Hawaii's national parks and beaches?
Beaches are free. National park entry is charged per car, and Hanauma Bay is free for children under 12. Diamond Head and many state parks charge non-residents per person.
