How Much Is a Hawaii Trip for 2 People? Budget, Mid-Range and Luxury

Most trips to Hawaii are taken by two people: newlyweds, couples marking an anniversary, friends escaping winter. The good news is that a couple shares the biggest costs, the room and the car, so Hawaii gets noticeably cheaper per person. Here is what a week for two really costs in 2026–2027, at three levels of comfort.

$3,700Budget week for two
$7,150Mid-range week for two
$14,800Luxury week for two
$850Mid-range cost per day for two

The short answer

A week in Hawaii for two people costs roughly $3,700 on a budget, $7,150 mid-range and $14,800 in luxury, including round-trip flights from the US West Coast. Without flights, plan on about $400 a day for two on a budget, $850 mid-range and $1,800 or more for a resort holiday.

Per day for two (no flights)BudgetMid-rangeLuxury
Room with tax$215$430$930
Food$120$220$450
Car & transport$50$100$150
Activities$30$100$300
Total per day$415$850$1,830

Estimates from 2026 prices. Rooms include about 18.7% tax; mid-range and luxury include typical resort fees and parking, averaged per night.

A budget week for two

A budget trip for two is entirely possible, especially on Oʻahu. Book a simple hotel a few blocks back from the beach in Waikīkī, or a studio with a kitchenette, for around $180 a night before tax. Fly in a quiet month such as May or September, when West Coast fares can fall below $400 round trip.

Eat breakfast in your room, pack picnic lunches from a supermarket, and treat yourselves to plate lunches, poke bowls and food trucks, which still cost about $15–25 a plate. Use TheBus to get around Oʻahu and rent a car for just a day or two to see the North Shore. Spend your days on the things that are free: beaches, snorkeling from shore, sunsets and hikes.

Budget total, 7 nights: flights $800, room $1,500, food $850, transport $350, activities $200 = about $3,700.

A mid-range week for two

This is the trip most couples take. A comfortable hotel or condo near the beach costs about $350 a night before tax on Oʻahu and more on the neighbour islands; with taxes, a resort fee and parking, budget around $430 a night on average. Add a rental car for the week, a mix of casual restaurants and one or two special dinners, and a few paid experiences such as a snorkel cruise, a luau or a sunrise at Haleakalā.

Mid-range total, 7 nights: flights $1,200, stay $3,000, food $1,550, car and gas $700, activities $700 = about $7,150. That lines up closely with independent sample budgets, which put a week on Oʻahu for a couple at around $6,500.

A luxury week or honeymoon

Hawaii's luxury resorts are among the most expensive in the United States. In 2026 the average luxury hotel room cost about $719 a night before tax, and oceanfront rooms at the top resorts in Wailea, Kāʻanapali, Kohala or Poʻipū often cost far more. Resort dining runs about $65 per person before drinks, and a sunset dinner for two with wine can easily pass $300.

A honeymoon week with an oceanview room, a helicopter flight, a private boat trip and several special dinners will typically cost $12,000–15,000 for two, and much more at the most exclusive properties. Many resorts offer honeymoon packages with breakfast, spa credits or upgrades; they are worth asking for, especially outside peak season.

The cost by island

The island you choose changes the budget more than anything else. Here is the same mid-range week for two on each island, with the hotel rates the islands actually averaged in mid-2026:

IslandHotel, 7 nightsCar & gasFoodActivitiesFlightsTotal
Oʻahu$2,429$714$1,550$700$1,200$6,590
Maui$4,676$861$1,550$700$1,200$8,990
Big Island$3,948$763$1,550$700$1,200$8,160
Kauaʻi$3,738$945$1,550$700$1,200$8,130

Average hotel rate (June 2026) plus 18.7% tax, before resort fees. Flights: two round trips from the US West Coast.

Oʻahu is the clear value choice. Maui costs the most, roughly $2,500 more for the same week, which is why many couples pair a few nights in Waikīkī with a few on a neighbour island. If you do that, remember that inter-island flights have become expensive in 2026.

Where couples overspend

The best-value time for couples

Couples without children have a big advantage: they can travel outside school holidays. The sweet spots are late April to early June and September to early November. Flights are cheaper, hotels discount, beaches are quieter and the weather is warm and mostly dry on leeward coasts. September is often the single cheapest month of the year.

If whales are on your wish list, aim for January to March and accept higher prices; early December can be a good compromise, with the first humpbacks arriving and rates lower than over Christmas. One more tip for anniversaries and honeymoons: tell the hotel when you book. Many Hawaii resorts offer a small welcome gift or a better room for special occasions when availability allows, and it costs nothing to ask.
