A family trip to Hawaii is one of the great adventures of childhood: the first turtle, the first wave, the first plate of shave ice the size of a head. It also takes planning, from choosing an island that suits your children's ages to keeping them safe in a powerful ocean. This guide brings together everything we know about Hawaii with kids, with links to our detailed guides.
Choosing an island
Oʻahu is the best all-round choice, especially with young children: short flights, calm lagoons at Ko Olina, an aquarium and zoo, and plenty for rainy days. Maui is perfect for relaxed beach holidays and winter whales. The Big Island suits curious older children with its volcano, lava tubes and mantas. Kauaʻi is for nature-loving families; some parks remain closed after Hurricane Lowell in autumn 2026. Read which island is best with kids.
Where to stay
Look for walking distance to a calm, lifeguarded beach, a kitchen and laundry, and short drives. Ko Olina and Waikīkī on Oʻahu, Kāʻanapali, Nāpili and Kīhei on Maui, Poʻipū on Kauaʻi and Waikoloa on the Big Island are the classic family bases. See where to stay with kids and Maui with kids.
The best things to do
Snorkeling with turtles, boogie boarding, surf lessons, tide pools, aquariums, lava tubes, whale watching and luaus. See things to do in Hawaii with kids, plus our guides for Oʻahu, Maui, Kauaʻi and the Big Island.
Keeping kids safe in the ocean
- Swim only at lifeguarded beaches, and ask the lifeguard about conditions.
- Avoid north shores in winter, when big waves and rip currents arrive.
- Use flotation vests for young or weak swimmers and stay within arm's reach.
- Teach children never to turn their back on the ocean.
- Stay out of the water for 48–72 hours after heavy rain.

Flights and jet lag
From the US West Coast, flights take about five to six hours, and Hawaii is two or three hours behind; children usually wake very early for the first few days, which is perfect for calm morning beaches. From Europe or the East Coast, the journey is long and the time difference large. Plan a slow first day, get outside in the morning light and keep to local mealtimes.
Packing and car seats
Bring rash guards, mineral sunscreen, hats, water shoes and a well-fitting mask for each child. Hawaii requires car seats for children under 4 and booster seats until 8; rental companies charge per day, so many families bring their own. See packing for families.
Budget and itineraries
A mid-range week for a family of four costs around $10,000–11,000 including flights from the US West Coast. A condo with a kitchen and free activities save the most. See a family budget and our one-week family itinerary.
What children remember
Ask families what their children remember about Hawaii and the answers are rarely the sights on the itinerary. They remember the turtle that surfaced right next to them, the gecko on the hotel wall, the first wave that carried their boogie board all the way to the sand, the taste of their first shave ice, the fire dancers at the luau and the night they saw more stars than they knew existed. The best family trips leave space for these moments: long mornings on the same calm beach, short drives, and time to watch the ocean.
Children also learn quickly about respect for nature and culture here: keeping their distance from turtles and monk seals, not taking lava rocks, saying "mahalo" (thank you). Those lessons last longer than any souvenir.
Rainy days and down time
Plan for jet lag and rest: one main outing a day, then the pool or beach. On rainy days, head for aquariums (the Waikīkī Aquarium on Oʻahu, the Maui Ocean Center), museums such as the Bishop Museum, or simply drive to the sunnier leeward coast, where it is usually dry.
