Where to Stay in Hawaii for Couples: The Most Romantic Areas

Every Hawaiian sunset is romantic, but some places make it easier to enjoy one together: a quiet beach a few steps from your room, a lanai facing the ocean, a restaurant where you can hear the waves. For couples, the best places to stay trade bustle for space and views. Here is where to find them on each island.

What makes a place romantic

For couples, look for three things: a west-facing or leeward coast for sunsets and sunshine, a quieter resort or small hotel with fewer families in the pool, and a walkable beach or coastal path for evening strolls. Ask about adults-only pools, oceanview rooms and special-occasion touches when you book.

Maui

Wailea and Mākena

Best for: sunshine, luxury, beach walks

Wailea's resorts sit on five golden crescents joined by a coastal path, with sunsets over Kahoʻolawe and Molokini. Mākena's wild Big Beach is just to the south.

Kapalua

Best for: quiet luxury, snorkeling, golf

Green, breezy and peaceful, Kapalua is the most secluded of Maui's resort areas, with calm bays for snorkeling together in summer. See where to stay on Maui.

Kauaʻi

Princeville and Hanalei

Best for: drama, mountains, quiet

Rooms overlooking Hanalei Bay and the waterfall-streaked mountains are among the most romantic in Hawaii. Expect showers; in return, you get rainbows. Hāʻena reopened in October 2026 after Hurricane Lowell.

Poʻipū

Best for: sunshine and sunsets

Kauaʻi's sunny south shore has resorts, beach cottages and sunset walks along the coast. See where to stay on Kauaʻi.

The Big Island

The Kohala Coast

Best for: beaches, starry nights, space

Luxurious resorts set in lava fields, with some of the best beaches in Hawaii and some of the darkest night skies; add a sunset and stargazing trip on Mauna Kea and a night in Volcano Village for the lava glow.

Oʻahu

Diamond Head Waikīkī and Kāhala

Best for: city romance, history, quiet beaches

The Diamond Head end of Waikīkī is calmer than the centre, with historic beachfront hotels and Sans Souci Beach. Kāhala, beyond Diamond Head, offers a quiet resort atmosphere 15 minutes from Waikīkī.

Lānaʻi

Lānaʻi

Best for: seclusion, luxury, nature

Lānaʻi has no traffic lights, a single small town and two luxury resorts, one of them adults-only. Reach it by ferry from Maui (about 75 minutes) or by a short flight. Hulopoʻe Bay, a marine reserve where spinner dolphins often visit, is one of the best beaches in Hawaii.

When to go

For couples without school holidays to worry about, the sweet spots are late April to early June and September to October: warm, mostly dry weather on the leeward coasts, quieter beaches and lower room rates. From January to March, humpback whales make Maui and the Kohala Coast especially magical, but prices are at their highest, so book early. Avoid the Christmas and New Year fortnight if you want peace and value.

Romantic experiences worth planning

Many of the most romantic moments in Hawaii cost nothing: an early swim on an empty beach, a walk along Wailea's coastal path, or the green flash as the sun sinks into the Pacific.

Choosing the right room

In Hawaii, the room category matters as much as the hotel. "Oceanfront" means the room faces the ocean directly; "oceanview" usually means a full or partial view; "partial oceanview" can mean a glimpse from the edge of the balcony. For sunsets, choose a west-facing room on a leeward coast. Ask about quieter wings away from the family pool, and whether the resort has an adults-only pool. Remember to compare the total price, including about 18.7% tax and any resort fee.
