The Big Island is almost twice the size of all the other Hawaiian islands combined, with eight of the world's climate zones, from tropical rainforest to alpine tundra. Staying in the wrong place can mean five hours in the car for a single day at the volcano. The answer for most visitors is simple: two bases, one on each side of the mountains.
Two bases, not one
The island's visitor coast is in the west, around Kona and the Kohala Coast: dry, sunny and lined with lava fields, coral reefs and white-sand beaches. The volcano and the rainforest are in the east, around Hilo and Volcano Village. For a week, spend four or five nights in the west and two in the east. For a shorter trip, stay in Kona and accept one long day trip to the volcano, or fly into Kona and out of Hilo.

Kailua-Kona and Keauhou
Kailua-Kona
Best for: value, restaurants, boat trips
The island's main visitor town has a seafront lined with restaurants and bars, the historic Huliheʻe Palace and the pier where many snorkel and dive boats leave. Hotels and condos here are the island's best value on the sunny side, and the airport is 15 minutes away.
Keauhou
Best for: manta rays, condos, a quieter base
South of town, Keauhou has condos, a resort and the bay where the famous manta ray night snorkel often takes place. It is a good base for Kealakekua Bay, Kona coffee country and Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau.
The Kohala Coast
Waikoloa, Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea
Best for: beaches, luxury, families
North of the airport, black lava fields frame green resort oases. Waikoloa has large family resorts around ʻAnaehoʻomalu Bay; Mauna Lani and the Mauna Kea resort area further north have luxurious hotels on Hāpuna and Kaunaʻoa, two of the finest beaches in Hawaii. The weather is almost always dry. It is the island's most expensive area, and 2.5–3 hours from the volcano.
Volcano Village
Volcano Village
Best for: the national park, rainforest, starry nights
A village of B&Bs, cottages and lodges in the misty rainforest just outside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, at about 3,700 feet. Nights are cool, so bring a sweater. Staying here lets you see the park early and after dark, when lava glow can be visible during eruptions. Since October 2026 some summit trails and overlooks are closed because of earthquakes and inflation, so check the park updates.
Hilo and the Hāmākua Coast
Hilo
Best for: waterfalls, value, old Hawaii
Hilo is a working town of old wooden storefronts, a busy farmers' market and one of the rainiest climates in the US. Hotels are cheaper than in the west, the volcano is 45 minutes away, and ʻAkaka and Rainbow Falls are close by. North of Hilo, the Hāmākua Coast has small inns among gulches and waterfalls.
Waimea and Upcountry
Waimea
Best for: cool weather, ranch country, Mauna Kea
The paniolo (cowboy) town of Waimea sits in green pastures at about 2,700 feet, cool and often misty. It is close to the Kohala beaches and the road to Mauna Kea, with a few inns and some of the island's best restaurants.
Rental rules: the Big Island now requires all short-term vacation rentals to be registered with the county, with its new law taking effect in 2026. Ask for the registration number. For your days, see 5 days on the Big Island.
When to go
The Kona and Kohala coasts are sunny all year; Hilo and Volcano are wet in every season, wettest in winter. From December to April, humpback whales cruise along the Kohala Coast, and snow can cap Mauna Kea. Volcano activity, not the season, decides whether you can see lava; check the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory before you book your night in Volcano.
Big Island hotels are less expensive than Maui's on average, but the Kohala resorts are among the priciest in Hawaii, while Hilo and Kona town offer some of the best value in the islands.
Quick answers
Where should I stay on the Big Island?
Split your stay: three or four nights on the Kona side (Kailua-Kona, Keauhou or the Kohala Coast) for beaches and sunshine, and one or two nights in Volcano Village or Hilo for Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.
Is it better to stay in Kona or Hilo?
Kona for sunshine, beaches, snorkeling and manta rays; Hilo for waterfalls, rainforest, lower prices and easier access to the volcano. Most visitors base themselves in Kona and add a night or two on the east side.
How far is Kona from the volcano?
About two and a half hours each way to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. From Hilo it is about 45 minutes, and from Volcano Village just a few minutes.
Where are the best beaches on the Big Island?
On the Kohala Coast north of Kona: Hāpuna, Kaunaʻoa (Mauna Kea Beach) and ʻAnaehoʻomalu Bay at Waikoloa.
